Forestry

In 2003, our region exported some $400 million in forest products, and those sales figures will only get better as prices for oriented strandboard and lumber remain strong across world markets.

Forestry activities are centered around High Level and La Crete and employ a significant portion of the region’s labour force.

The industry is comprised of both small operators (loggers, transport, and service) and large companies.

The Tolko Industries sawmill is one of the largest mills in Alberta and the oriented strandboard (OSB) mill owned and operated by Footner Forest Products is the largest of its kind in the world.

La Crete Sawmill produces kiln-dried lumber and specialty wood pellets.

The sector provides direct year-round employment to some 700 people, and up to another 550 in seasonal positions.
