Education & Research Facilities

Two post-secondary institutions, 30 schools, an agricultural research station all stand testament to the importance of education and research in northwest Alberta.

Educational Facilities

  • 15 schools
  • 3 outreach programs

Mennonite, First Nation, and Christian education societies also operate schools.

Northern Lakes College new window icon

Northern Lakes College is now the primary post-secondary institution in the Mackenzie Region, with community locations in High Level, Fort Vermilion, and La Crete. Provides post-secondary instruction in Fort Vermilion and Paddle Prairie.

Tier One Research Facilities

The Fort Vermilion Research Site spans nearly 500 acres, and is one of the most northerly agricultural research locations in the world. Here, numerous leading edge experiments are conducted, many focused on the adaptation of technologies for this promising northern agricultural area. The Fort Vermilion Research Site is part of the Lacombe Research Centre.
